On December 17th I participated in the Johnny Rockets Toy Drive to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Camarillo. It was all about the kids, cool cars, and holiday cheer! Santa Clause, Santa Paws, and myself were on hand to help make these children's Christmas that much better. Station 50 brought two Fire Trucks that lead the caravan from Johnny Rockets to the Boys and Girls Club through the center of town! In all, over 150 children received a new unwrapped gift of their choice.

Last week was very busy. More pallets went out and I picked up Holiday Luggage filled with toys to deliver to Casa Pacifica. One of my favorite stops was at Oak Park Neighborhood School where I was presented with 4 pieces of luggage that the pre-schoolers had stuffed full of toys. They even made personalized cards for each of the foster children who would be receiving the luggage. I attended their Holiday Program and loved hearing them sing their little hearts out! California International Titleholder Holiday Party

Tis the season and what better way to celebrate than with our Annual Titleholder Holiday Party. This year it was held at Spanish Hills Country Club. We enjoyed a delicious brunch, exchanged gifts, made memories to last a lifetime, and took hundreds of pictures. It was so nice to have every titleholder's family attend. Thank you to our amazing Director, Eddie Peterson, and each of my sister titleholders. I hope the new year brings you all much joy and success.

Camarillo Christmas Parade's 50th Anniversary

Today Miss Teen California Intl, Amanda Jenkins, our Director Eddie Peterson, and myself participated in the 50th Anniversary Christmas Parade in my hometown. What an amazing turnout and you could not have asked for a better day. There were over 120 entries from girl scout troops to marching bands. We all had such a great time and enjoyed being a part of it. Happy Holidays to everyone!

Coachman Car Club Toy Drive for My Stuff Bags for the Holidays

I was happy that Amanda and her family were able to accompany me to the Coachman Car Club Toy Drive for My Stuff Bags. My Stuff Bags is a non-profit organization similar to Luggage of Love. They give duffle bags to children entering the system. Where I give them luggage to foster and shelter children who are in transition. "Skeeter" from Coachman Car Club did a fantastic job of organizing this toy drive. Many car enthusiast showed up to donate a unwrapped toy for this great cause. Amanda, her sister, myself and my siblings all brought a toy to donate to a child in need. Congratulation to the Coachman Car Club on a successful fundraiser that many children will surely benefit from this Holiday Season!

One of our Holiday Luggage pallets was shipped to Day Middle School in Temecula. Once the luggage was filled with toys for the foster & shelter children in their area they sent me pictures prior to the shipment being picked up for delivery. I am so happy that the students, faculty, and staff chose to make a difference this holiday season by helping so many children who are in need. Thank you again Day Middle School... Gold Coast Travellarians Holiday Party

Last night I was treated to a wonderful dinner as the guest speaker at the Gold Coast Travellarians Holiday Party. To my surprise each of the members of this non-profit organization brought a suitcase or made a cash donation to Luggage of Love. After speaking to the group I was approached by a striking young woman who confided in me that her childhood was very similar to mine. It is always a rare and precious moment when you meet someone else who has had a similar past and has risen above and became victorious rather than a victim. Advokids

Today, I had the opportunity to meet with Advokids up north in the Bay Area. Advokids is a legal resource for California foster children and their advocates. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to defending the rights and meeting the needs of children who are in the California foster care system due to abuse or neglect at home.

I met with Margaret and her team of lawyers to learn more about their non-profit and how I can help. Advokids provides direct legal assistance, support and education to foster children and their advocates, including lawyers, CASA volunteers, FFAs, social
workers, mental health providers, and foster and adoptive parents.

For example, when I was finally granted the right to be adopted it took 2 long painful years to be finalized. Advokids would have helped out by giving us FREE legal advise on how to speed things along. This is such a wonderful non-profit that truly aids those having troubles understanding the process and legality issues behind adopting foster children. Marths's Village & Kitchen Thanksgiving 5K

During Thanksgiving I like to take the time to give back to those who have a similar past as mine. This year I had the opportunity to run in the Marths's Village & Kitchen Thanksgiving 5K run with my sister, Megan Brunett and a very dear friend of mine, Miss Teen Nevada International 2012, Courtney Critz. This race took place in beautiful La Quinta California. Martha's Village & Kitchen is the largest provider of homeless services in Riverside County. Annually they provide over 43,800 nights of shelter, of which 22,338 are for children under 15. I am blessed to have supported this amazing foundation, and honored to have been asked to share a little bit of my past with the runners prior to the race and why I chose to participate that day.

This past Friday night I was honored to attended the Bakersfield Pageant. Thank you GT Productions for hosting and giving me the opportunity to talk on stage about what my year as Miss California International 2012 and what pageants as a whole have done for me thus far. It was so nice to see so many familiar faces especially one of my sister queens Mrs California International 2010, Ashley Pavletich. Over 650 people attended the event with over 40 contestants biding for the titles of Mrs., Miss, and Teen Bakersfield. At the end of the night 3 ladies were crowned. Congratulations to Madison Swaim, Miss Teen Bakersfield; Nashay Mathews, Miss Bakersfield; and Joslynn Jarrett Skelton, Mrs. Bakersfield. I wish all three of you ladies the best during your reign. Congratulations!

Fall Fest & Fallin' for the Classics Car Show

What a beautiful day for a community event. The Ventura County Fall Fest held in Newbury Park was attended by more than 5,000 people. There was so much to do, from Kids’ Carnival Games, to Extreme Games, a Car Show, Street Fair & Exhibitions, Food Court, Live Music and Activities for Special Needs Children. Best of all it was FREE. As a special guess attendee I signed autographs and took pictures. I also helped out with the Fallin' for the Classics Charity Car Show. I helped present the awards and was giving a little time to speak about who I was and what Luggage of Love does within our community. It seems like every event I attend I meet so many great people. I listen to them share their stories of making a difference and it touches my heard to see so many individuals with hearts of gold. Thank you everyone for being so kind and more importantly coming together as a community to have fun. I was honored to be a part of this event and meet so many new friends.

Oak Park Neighborhood Preschool

Yesterday I visited Oak Park Neighborhood Preschool. The children are learning about the importance of helping others in need. They recently ran a lemonade stand to raise funds for a charity and they chose Luggage of Love as the recipient of the $122 they were able to raise! I had a wonderful time sharing my story and answering all of the questions the children had to ask about homeless, shelter and foster children- they were so intrigued! My favorite part of the q&a portion was when a sweet and thoughtful 5 year old little girl named Gracie raised her hand and said," Can I ask the children with no homes to come live with me because I have bunk-beds and I really want to share with them." Thank you Melisssa & Cruz Lockerman for suggesting Luggage of Love to the class and for introducing me to all of the wonderful children. You two are true blessings and I am really looking forward to the different ways we can help each other in the future. Ponies by the Sea

Today I participated in the 2011 Ponies by the Sea Car Show. There were over 100 vehicles on display. All of the proceeds from this event benefited The Guide Dogs of America. Guide Dogs of America is dedicated to its mission to provide guide dogs and instruction in their use, free of charge, to blind and visually impaired men and women from the United States and Canada so that they may continue to pursue their goals with increased mobility and independence. Tahoe Safe Alliance, Stopping Abuse for EVERYONE

Today I met with Liz Soto, a Residential Program Manager, for Tahoe Safe Alliance. Tahoe Safe Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing the incidence and trauma of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse. It is currently the only agency providing assistance to victims of intimate partner violence and sexual assault in the North Lake Tahoe/Truckee region of California and Nevada and owns/operates the only safe house in the community.

The Mountain Rose Safe House is a comforting and welcoming home where women and children come to find a refuge. It is an empowering program which offers a wide variety of services to those who want to start a life free of violence. The safe house is a place where clients can collect themselves, look at their lives, assess their needs and plan for the future. It is a 60-day program that can shelter up to three families. Tahoe SAFE Alliance provides shelter, food, and day to day living essentials, allowing the families to save money towards independent living. This program also offers peer counseling, licensed therapy, intimate partner violence and sexual assault education, pattern-changing techniques, therapy-like art projects, financial literacy, advocacy and accompaniment to different appointments, transportation, children’s program services and legal assistance.

I am happy to say that Luggage of Love will be providing luggage to the families within this program.

A Day at the Ballet for local foster children...

This afternoon I attended the 2nd Annual Day at the Ballet as their special guest. Last years event was so special to me that I could not miss it this year. The Ventura County Ballet Company along with The Angel Heart Foundation hosted this wonderful event that benefits the foster, shelter & kinship children in Ventura County. The children had the opportunity to decorate a point shoe, create ballet crafts, get their faces painted, decorate and eat a yummy cookie, and of course perform a small portion of the Nutcracker to an audience of foster parents, kinship parents, CASA's, and the ballet company. After the performance I read a short story to the group and told them about how much we all had in common. I shared with them my dream of becoming a princess and how my dreams came true because I believed. Several of the girls shared their dreams and I encouraged them to make them reality. I signed autographs and took pictures but most of all I hugged and listened to the girls. I let them know that I am proud of them and I believe that they can do anything as long as they believe in themselves.

Toast Our K-9 Heroes Fundraiser

This evening I had the pleasure of supporting the Ventura Sheriffs K-9 Foundation. Tom and Jane Rozanski opened up their beautiful home in support of this amazing cause. Who knew that an untrained patrol canine cost approximately $8,000 - $9,000, and the average cost of a fully trained sheriff K-9 is approximately $30,000. This foundation was set up to help maintain training, equipment, and care for the police dogs since 1986. Solely through community support, the foundation is able to continue it's commitment of protecting the safety of the residents of Ventura County. It was nice to see so many familiar faces who support this much needed foundation. And a pleasure to meet many new people who shared a common interest. Many of the dogs were on site, and at a couple times during the fundraiser they performed different demonstrations. It is amazing the bond that each officer has with his dog, not to mention the handling & training that goes into having one of these K-9's.

9th Annual Teen Summit

My travels took me south to Los Alamitos where I was privileged to have a Luggage of Love table during the 9th Annual Teen Summit. Over 180 young men and women, ages 12 and over, attended the conference that focused on educating the attendees on violence prevention, teen dating violence, drugs & alcohol, provide alternatives and empower the youth to build safe and healthy relationships with others. Although Luggage of
Love was not the main topic of my discussions, it gave the attendees validation to the path I have chosen. My main focus was on letting them know that anything is possible as long as you put your mind to it. I talked to groups of teens throughout the day and shared with them my story of being born a drug baby, having been sexually and physically abused, homeless, in foster & shelter care, and having to struggle to fit in. More importantly I talked with them about making a choice to be something rather than a statistic. I look forward to attending next year and being one of their speakers. Thank you Maribel Contreras for inviting me and putting on such a valuable informative conference for the youth in your area.

California International Pageant Summer Orientation

Today was the Summer Orientation for the California International Pageant to be held in September in Downey. It was so nice to see so many familiar faces. Eddie Peterson, the Executive Director, and Dennis Cook, the Executive Producer, both shared valuable information about the upcoming pageant. The reigning titleholders shared a little bit about their journeys thus far and all of the amazing opportunities that they have been blessed with because of the crown. During the orientation, each of the delegates had the opportunity to give a brief description of the platform they are championing. I was so impressed with all of the delegates and how inspirational all of these young ladies and women are. Each one is making a difference in their community and it warms my heart to see such passion and commitment.

For those of you who are not familiar with the International Pageant System, it is one that is very near to my heart. In fact, this system created the path for me to start my own non-profit 501(c)3 organization, Luggage of Love. The International Pageant System prides itself on showcasing the achievements of women within their communities. It is much more than a beauty pageant; it is a foundation to learn and be inspired. I can tell you first hand that competing side by side with these ladies is very empowering and I am honored to be a part of this pageant system.

$200 Donation to Courtney's Toy Clean Up Project

My dear friend Courtney Critz is the reigning Jr. Miss California International 2011. She uses her title to champion her cause, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. For those who do not know, St. Judes is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never have to pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family's inability to pay. To help raise funds for St. Judes, Courtney started Toy Clean-Up Project. Through this, Courtney collects new or gently used toys. She then holds garage sales and donates all of the proceeds to her cause. I am very inspired by Courtney's dedication and perseverance. So, I could not think of a better way to support her efforts than by collecting toys in my area and holding a garage sale of my own. Through this one sale we were able to raise $200! All of the proceeds from the sale went to Courtney and her project. I am so proud of you Courtney and all of your efforts with your cause. Keep up the great work girly!!

American Cancer Society Bugatti Ball Evening of Hope Gala

The Bugatti Ball Evening of Hope is a fundraising event to benefit the American Cancer Society. Last year the gala alone raised over $220,000. This year the event was held at The Mullin Automotive Museum. Attendees were offered guided tours by the curator, Andrew Reilly, and the formal dinner was catered by celebrity caterer, the Kitchen for Exploring Foods. The Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic (1936), valued at nearly $40 million, was the showpiece at the Evening of Hope Bugatti Ball. I along with three other beautiful ladies were asked to model jewelry for Fox, George Thompson, and Diamond Design jewelery that would be auctioned off to help raise monies for the fight against cancer. I am proud to say that we sold ALL of the tickets allocated for the jewelery auction and I was able to donate a "Princess Party" as a silent auction item to benefit the cause. Any amount of effort and volunteerism helps, and I truly hope that, along with my friends, we were able to make a difference in the lives of cancer patients and their families.

Foreign Exchange Program

I had the pleasure of being the special guest for a group of children visiting from China. I learned so much about their culture and I was very inspired by there dedication to their education. All of them were from Beijing and attended the Experimental High School attached to BNU (Beijing Normal University). Their culture is very different from ours. They were very interested in our families and how we all interact. They asked many questions about the beauty pageant. I learned that much of their time is spent focused on school work. Many of them attend school 10 hours a day. They eat lunch at the school, come home for dinner, and return to school in the evening. It was an honor to meet you Jerry, Scott, Rose, Sherry, Ivy, Elaine, and everyone else. I wish you all safe travels and all the success in your future endeavors.

Rotary Club's 19th Annual Care for Kids Golf Classic

The 19th Annual Care for Kids Golf Classic is hosted by Rotary Club of Camarillo and the proceeds from this event benefit Casa Pacifica. Casa Pacifica is very near and dear to my heart and it is always an honor to speak on behalf of them as a former foster youth resident of the shelter. Petra and Al Lowe, two of the sweetest and most caring people I know, sponsored the charity event, and I have to take time to thank them and The Rotary Club for giving me another chance to share how passionate I am about Casa Pacifica and all that it has done for me. Also, I want to thank The Rotary Club for their very generous donation of $800 to Luggage of Love, and the most amazing Casa Pacifica blanket ever! It was also a pleasure volunteering my time today to help out in what ever way possible during the golf tournament. This event was truly phenomenal: great food, great company, great raffle items all for a great cause. I am looking forward to helping more with the Care for Kids Golf Classic in the years to come. And did I mention even Archie the therapy dog from Casa was in attendance doing what he does best...relaxing. He is truly a blessing to many of these children who only open up to him. I can not tell you how valuable he is to the shelter and how much I wish that he would have been there when I needed a friend. So here is to Archie, Casa Pacifica's for legged angel!

National Car Collector Appreciation Day

What a great day for an event that showcases car collectors' pride in ownership of their vehicles. Today's event was held on the beautiful campus of Cal Lutheran University. The event brought out more than 600 cars with approximately 3,000 spectators attending throughout the morning and late into the afternoon. All proceeds from this event went to Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles. Children’s Hospital-Los Angeles is a non-profit with impeccable credentials and a worldwide reputation for being the best in pediatrics and who care for over 100,000 children annually from all over the world. They are well known for their amazing work and cutting edge technology. It was an honor to be a part of this event and raise money for a great and valuable cause.

Eagle Scout Project on Luggage of Love

I would like to thank, Shane Laguna, for choosing to do his Eagle Scout project on Luggage of Love. Shane told me that the reson why he chose Luggage of Love because he believes in its mission of helping each child in shelter and foster care start their journey on the right path, with a new piece of luggage- NOT a trash bag. So Shane rallied up a group of his friends and volunteers, and with a lot of teamwork from all of these generous people, 3 pallets were able to be shipped to children in shelters throughout California! WOW, way to go Shane!

After months and months of planning and preparation, I am so happy this day finally arrived, and I have SO many people to thank because of this. From all the volunteers to the vendors and the attendees I owe you all a huge THANK YOU!!! Luggage of Love flourishes because of generous, open hearted people such as you. This year I not only promoted and fundraised for Luggage of Love and children in the system; but I also had the opportunity, with the blessing of Brenda, to dedicate my car show in the memory of her life partner and local automotive icon, "Jalopy Joe" Moody. From 6am to 4pm, my "crew" and I worked to put on an amazing show. Being the second car show, we had just under 100 entrees! One of my friends, Nia Sanchez, Miss Hollywood USA, was our special guest at the event. We also had amazing raffle prizes from Flat Screen TV's to a beautiful diamond and pearl necklace donated by George Thompson Diamond Company. Tons of Snap-On Tools as well as 2 children's bikes and much more! The Meadowlark Service League ("MSL") is a non-profit organization of women dedicated to raising funds for a variety of local charitable organizations and programs. They have given over $2,000,000 to worthy organizations since their inception in 1971. This year they awarded $235,000 in grants to deserving, non profit organizations and scholarships to local graduating high school seniors and continuing college students. One of the conditions of the grants is that all recipients must be located in Ventura County and the money must be spent in Ventura County. I am honored that the Meadowlarks included Luggage of Love as one of their recipients this year. Thank you to all of the ladies who work countless hours to raise these funds, it is greatly appreciated and I am humbled beyond words. I look forward to putting these funds into a pod placement on the Casa Pacifica Shelter site. Your grant money will help the many children in transition in Ventura County so they do not have to put their personal belongings into trash bags.

Luggage Shipment to RFKC Temecula

As I have mentioned before, Royal Family Kids Camp is very near and dear to my heart. The chapter in Temecula has been in contact with me to be a part of their program. I was honored to be a speaker last May for their counselor training prior to camp. Another way I could help the camp was by donating luggage for each of the campers to bring their belongings home in after the camp. Having personally been a camper at RFKC when I was younger, I remember how fantastic and life changing the camp was. I also remember how excited I was to get so much "stuff/gifts" when camp was reaching an end. The only downside was that all of the gifts were put into trash bags. As Luggage of Love grows, I want to be able to provide all of the Royal Family Kids Camps with luggage, so that they too will not have to rely on trash bags. This will be yet another way that my luggage will get into the much needed hands of our foster and shelter youth. With the help of all of my amazing donors and volunteers, I know this goal can and will come true!

Creative Collision Fashion Show

Today I modeled in a fashion show at SupperClub in Hollywood. I was so excited to wear an original design from the Jacqueline Alejandra collection. Jacqueline is so talented and I love her work. The show was full of boutique vendors as well as live painters. I can not believe the talent that was at this venue. The show was a huge success and I am honored to have been a part of it!

Royal Family of Temecula

When I was in foster care, I was blessed to have had the opportunity to attend a one week summer camp designed for "high risk" children such as myself who were a part of the system. Those two summers that I attended had an enormous impact on my life I still remember them like they were
yesterday. I have always told my Forever Family that one day I would give back to this camp that had given so much to me. As time went on, and my life became busier, I still found myself wishing that I could find time to help out in some way. Finally, I received a letter from a wonderful lady named Sandy Shelton, who said she was a part of Royal Family Kids Camp in Temecula. She was inquiring if I would like to be involved with their program. I immediately jumped on the offer and between Sandy, Natalie Kinsley (RFKT's Director) and myself we came up with a way to make this happen. I was honored to be asked to be a speaker at their training meeting. They wanted me to share my experience and memories of the camp and what impact it had on me. I also remembered leaving camp as a child with my accumulated camp "stuff" in trash bags, so I decided to donate a pallet full of luggage to their organization for each of the campers...just another way that Luggage of Love can break the cycle of trash bags! Finally... Sandy Shelton, Natalie Kinsley, and the whole "Royal Family" I want you to know from the bottom of my heart that you all are so very valuable in these children's lives. Though they may not show it, you have impacted them in one way or another. And for that you all are angels! Thank you for allowing me to come help you. You have truly helped me in more ways than you will ever know. I look forward to being a part of this program for a very long time!

California International Pageant Workshop

I was so excited to stop by one of the California International Pageant Workshop that was being held in Temecula with past weekend and speak to the attendees about my experience of being Miss Teen California International 2010. I also shared with them a little bit about my story of being a former foster youth and how I founded Luggage of Love based on my personal life experiences. It was so nice to see, Britney Wagner, Miss California International 2011 and hear her experience so far and the opportunities she has been blessed with since being crowned. Eddie Peterson, the pageant's executive director, along with Dennis Cook, the pageant's executive producer, gave incite and valuable information on the do's and don'ts of being a contestant as well as what to expect the weekend of the pageant. The workshop was an overall success and I am happy to have been a part of it!

This afternoon I met with Jerry and Loretta Scott at the Las Posas Country Club. We spent time talking about Jerry's company, Canteen Vending, and the opportunity of teaming up with Luggage of Love on a National level. Canteen is the world’s largest vending company serving over five million customers every day through 18,500 client sites. We discussed ways that each state could contribute and keep the funds they raised for Luggage of Love within that state. I am very excited of what the future holds for this relationship, Jerry and Loretta are two extraordinary people and it truly warms my heart that they were so interested in my organization. The Meadowlarks Service League held their annual Tennis Tournament and Fashion Show Luncheon at the Las Posas Country Club today. I attended the luncheon as one of the models and had a fabulous time looking at and bidding on all of the lovely auction items. This wonderful group off women are dedicated to raising funds for a variety of local charitable organizations and programs that provide services to meet the needs of Ventura County. Since its inception in 1971, the Meadowlark Service League has given over $2,000,000 to worthy organizations. Thank you to the Camarillo Meadowlarks for their dedication to helping organizations throughout the community, and for asking me to be a part of your efforts.

Dining with the Dogs

This evening my Board of Directors of Luggage of Love and I attended Dining with the Dogs. All proceeds from this event went to supporting the National Police Dog Foundation, the Ventura County Sheriff's Department's K-9 Search and Rescue Team and the Sheriff Department's K-9 unit. All of which depend on private funding in order to operate. I had such a great time supporting this charity! The event was at the beautiful Camarillo Ranch and was complete with a yummy dog-shaped cake and a silent auction with wonderful items. All of the attendees had the opportunity to play and interact with the dogs one-on-one, several of the officers and their dogs held training demonstrations, and two cute German Sheppard pups were on hand that are in training to potentially become police dogs. What an amazing event for a worth while organization.

I was asked by Lindsay and Celia Feramisco to speak to Lindsay's 2nd grade Brownie Troop #60082 at Lang Ranch School in Thousand Oaks on Friday. It was Lindsay's week to pick a project for the girls to work on and she chose my organization, Luggage of Love. I was given a few minutes to share Luggage of Love and my childhood experiences with the girls and then they were given time to ask questions. I was so happy that the girls knew so much about and have helped Casa Pacifica, the emergency placement shelter I used to live at. After learning about the children in our community living in shelter and foster homes today, the girls were eager to help. They were all given blank luggage tags to decorate and attach to the 11 bags that they had donated to Luggage of Love. These bags will go to children in need as well as the donated $250 from Feramisco's co-workers at Amgen. Thank you to Celia and Lindsay Feramisco, all of Celia's co-workers, and especially to all of the girls in Brownie Troop #60082.

What a fun and generous group of women! These ladies have opened their hearts to Luggage of Love by donating luggage and cash this year. I was fortunate enough to be asked about to be the speaker for their March 16th meeting. I had the pleasure of the accompaniment to this speaking event by of one of my board members, Judy Farrar. I shared my story and Luggage of Love's story with the ladies of the club. It was an Irish themed meeting with yummy treats, Irish songs, and lots of ladies in green! I was touched by the stories I heard and the kind words told to me about my cause. Another Luggage Donation to Casa Pacifica!!!

It is always bitter sweet going back to Casa Pacifica. On one hand it is so nice to see all of the amazing staff members who work there. On the other it is a constant reminder of the many children who are in transition or without parents to love and care for them. It always seems that while I am out at Casa Pacifica I meet someone new. This time it was a nice gentleman named Wes. Special thanks to my best friend, Meghan, for helping with this delivery today. On this particular visit Luggage of Love gave Casa Pacifica 12 pieces of luggage and a box of clothes donated by Emily Krakower for their foster youth. Thank you Emily for having such a big heart and taking an interest in this special shelter! Also thank you to Michelle and Carrie for allowing me the opportunity to give back to a place that is dear to my heart and started me on a great path.

Tonight I attended the 2011 Miss & Teen Ventura County International Pageant with Meghan Lopez (Miss Ventura County Intl. 2009), Shauna Libby (Miss Ventura County Intl. 2010) and my beautiful sister Megan Brunett. I enjoyed watching the show and catching up with all the other
previous titleholders. It was so nice to see the gorgeous Brittney Wagner, Miss California International 2011, as well as the always stunning Mrs California International 2010, Ashley Pavletich. The contestants this evening were very well spoken- it was definitely a fierce competition! At the end of the night the only two crowns were awarded. Allison Bowman, who was my sister titleholder as Miss Gold Coast International, was crowned as the new Miss Ventura County International 2012 and the ever so cute Rachel Russell was named Miss Teen Ventura County International 2012. Congratulations ladies you shined like diamonds on the stage! I am so proud of you.

This morning I had the opportunity to speak at the Meadowlark Service League Meeting and present Luggage of Love to the group. I shared with the members how transitioning with garbage bags made me feel as though my personal treasures, no matter how used and tattered, was trash and therefore I must be as well. I shared my story, the same story of too many foster youth, and told of the negative lifelong effects carrying ones belongings has on a child who has nothing. Luggage of Love is doing its part to stop this viscious cycle. I truly hope my presentation inspired the members to adopt my cause as one of their own.

Miss & Teen Hollywood USA Pageant

Yesterday I had the honor of being a judge at the Miss & Teen Hollywood USA Pageant. My fellow judges were a blast to be around and they made the entire experience a memorable one. The first area of competition was the panel interview that was held in the morning. What a hard job! I now understand the pressure that judges have on them in finding the right canidate for the title. That night the girls competed in the 3 other areas of competition; swimwear, formal wear and on-stage question. All of the contestants did a fabulous job but at the end of the night there can only be two titleholders. I am proud to announce that the new Miss Hollywood USA 2011 is Nia Sanchez and the new Miss Hollywood Teen USA 2011 is Chloe Keller. Congratulations ladies! Additionally I would like to thank the director of this amazing pageant, Toay, for asking me to judge and be a part of this amazing pageant.

Hacienda Heights KIWINS

Today I spoke at Glen A Wilson High School in Hacienda Heights. Kiwins from several surrounding schools attended to hear about my background, the challenges I have faced, and the choices I have made not to be a statistic. This particular speaking engagement went really well. At one point it seemed like everyone had their hand up to ask a question. At the end of the event Luggage of Love implemented a coin collection jar program with the
different Kiwins groups in attendance. In total 25 jars were distributed. I am very excited about this program and can not wait to see its results. Another Pallet of Love

It always warms my heart when people take time to help Luggage of Love and the many children in transition today. Together with the help of a few volunteers, we packed up a load of luggage headed into the hands of many deserving children. This pallet was sent up North to the Placer County Emergency Children's Shelter, and the whole process was documented by a special guest photographer from Brooks Institute, Suzanne Tylander. Suzanne selected Luggage of Love for her photo story project and she was able to capture amazing photos of our entire packaging and shipping process. Hooray for the new year! It is bitter sweet saying good bye to 2010 as it was a year of memories that will last a lifetime. I was crowned Miss Teen California Intl 2010, Luggage of Love held its 1st Annual Car Show, I graduated in June, represented the Golden State of California at the National pageant in Chicago in July, and placed numerous pallets of luggage to shelters throughout California. This past year has to be one of the most memorable and eventful ones of my life. Luggage of Love grew tremendously and the substantial amount of opportunities I was given was incredible. I feel blessed to have been given a path that has led me to this point and I look forward to what the future holds. Although there are so many uncertainties in the world, there is one thing I know for sure...you have not heard the last of Luggage of Love or myself!

This weekend I traveled to Murrieta with my team of helpers to celebrate Juliana's Birthday Party. We spent the day at her beautiful home with her family and friends. Princess Juliana and her honored guests got their hair and makeup done. We sang rhymes, read books and played games. After a fun-filled day, we ate yummy cupcakes and the young ladies were elated to open their goodie bags that I had brought for each one of them. To my surprise when I got ready to leave I was presented with a trunk-load of luggage for Luggage of Love. And I was honored with a few kisses from the hansome young men as I left too. This weekend my team of helpers and I traveled to the beautiful Sherwood Hills Lake Club for a "Just Because" princess party for Olivia. Princess Olivia, her friends, and I had a lovely lunch, followed by hair and makeup, a few stories, and of course cupcakes!!! The little girls were thrilled to play with my crowns and go through their "goodie bags" at the end of the party. We even did a conga line (Princess Olivia's idea of course). Olivia's pink dress was amazing and she looked like the bell of the ball. Thank you so much Princess Olivia for spending the day with me, I had such a fun time! May your tiara shine and all your dreams come true.

The Nutcracker Ballet

This past weekend I was asked to make a special guest appearance in the Ventura County Ballet Company's November production of The Nutcracker. It was held at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center, and all three of the performances were packed. I played the part of a "party parent" in ACT I. I can not tell you how much fun it was to be able to sit backstage and watch all that goes into one of these productions...I had no clue what so ever that any one person could have 3 "change-ups" in one show. The amount of time and dedication by each dancer is amazing. The costumes alone are detailed to a T. I was honored to meet some of the nicest people who dedicate their time to this production each and every year. A gracious thank you to the Ventura Ballet Company for this wonderful opportunity. It was truly an experience.

Some of the dignitaries that attended were Appellate Court Justice Steve Perren, Retired Judge Melinda Johnson, Author Jane Alvarez, Director of BB&BS Lynne West, Oxnard Councilman Bryan MacDonald, Author Lissa Coffey, Mayor of Moorpark Janice Parvin, and Berta Steele (Founder of CASA in Ventura County). It was an honor to be asked by Andrea Visual, Project Manager of CASA Ventura County, to attend as a special guest. I want to personally thank every single CASA who has ever kindly donated their time, love, and support for these children. Your effort is making a huge difference. Being a former foster child, I truly wish that I had a CASA of my very own. The evening was educating not to mention memorable and was the most perfect way to celebrate the success of this
amazing program. Thanks for everyone for caring for children such as myself, you are truly making a difference in the lives of these children!

Kiwins Fall Rallly

I was honored this weekend to attend the Kiwins Knott's Fall Rally as the guest speaker. I was invited by Bernadat Lim and the current Kiwin's 32nd District Governor Jennifer Zhao. Jennifer initiated Project F.A.C.T.S which stands for Foster And Care Through Students. It is the 2010-2011 Governor’s Project and with the goal to educated and raise money for organizations helping foster children and provide guidance through mentoring. Their rally was held at Knotts Berry Farm's Independence Hall. All of the Kiwins from Southern California chapters attended. I honestly had no idea what to expect, but this was one of the most exciting events I have ever attended. The different chapters were so enthusiastic, and I am so happy to have had the chance to share my storyand the foundation I champion "Luggage of Love" with these amazing young volunteers. Thank you so much to Kiwins for having me as a speaker and for opening your heart to children such as myself. It is important that these children not be forgotten. Thanks again for doing your part!

2010 Youth Philanthropist of the Year Award

The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) is constantly working to advance philanthropy through advocacy, research, education and certification programs. The association fosters development and growth of fundraising professionals and promotes high ethical standards in the fundraising profession. National Philanthropy Day®, November 15, is the special day set aside to recognize and pay tribute to the great contributions that philanthropy—and those people active in the philanthropic community—have made to our lives, our communities and our world. This year was the 50th Anniversary of AFP and the event was held at The Ventura Beach Marriott. The Master of Ceremonies was KCLU General Manager, Mary Olson. I was honored at this ceremony as the 2010 Ventura Youth in Philanthropy for my efforts with Luggage of Love and the other service organizations I help out with on a continual basis. My amazing "forever family" attended to watch me receive this prestigious award as well as the Dean family. In fact, Mr. Geoff Dean presented me with my award! I was very touched by his introduction and thoughtful words, but more importantly that he and his wife, Marlene, got to share this special day with me and my family. It was very inspiring to hear about all the amazing work that other Philanthropist who were honored had done within their community and abroad. Many Mansions Bowls of Hope Project

Today was a very special day! My mom and I were able to share our joy of giving back to the homeless with my two good friends, Natallie Dianna and Kathy Campagnoni. We attended a fundraiser for Many Mansions which provides well-managed, service-enriched, affordable housing to low-income residents of Ventura County and its surrounding communities. The Bowls of Hope Project is designed to spread awareness of the need for affordable housing in Ventura County and the importance of on-site services and programs provided by Many Mansions. Five hundred ceramic bowls were created by local artists for guests to keep as a reminder of the day. Attendees enjoyed delicious soups and breads that were donated by local restaurants and served by dignitaries and civic leaders. We enjoyed live music, browsed the children's art gallery, participated in the silent action, met many nice people, and supported an amazing cause. Thank you to both Kathy and Natallie for not only accompaning me to such a wonderful event but more importantly sharing in giving back to the community in which we live. You both are great friends and l love you dearly.

Casa Pacifica Angels presents...Spotlight on Style Fashion Show and Luncheon

This Saturday I attended the Casa Pacifica Angels Spotlight on Style Fashion Show and Luncheon at Four Seasons in Westlake Village. This event included a champagne reception, luncheon, Runway Fashion Show, and an enticing silent auction. The venue was decorated fabulously. There was a long runway in the center of the room and each table had a manikin ladies head with a beautiful hat that had been decorated especially for the event. These hats were raffled off to raise money for Casa Pacifica, and I can tell you that everyone wanted a hat so the ticket buying was fierce. The event had gorgeous models, fabulous boutique items, and delicious food (especially the bundt cake...YUM!). More importantly though was the reason why all of these wonderful people got together for this special event...to support Casa Pacifica a place that is near and dear to my heart. Casa Pacifica is an emergency care shelter that helps abused, neglected, and severely emotionally disturbed children in Ventura County. It is also the shelter that gave me a new beginning and that continues to help children in similar situations as mine. It was so nice to see so many familiar faces at each of these events, and it warms my heart that so many people share in the same interest of helping children who really need a chance at a new beginning. That is why it was such an honor to speak on behalf of children before the fashion show. I shared my story with the attendees and encouraged each of them to sponsor a child. It takes a lot of money to run a facility like Casa Pacifica yearly and I can speak from experience how vital Casa Pacifica is for children like myself. After I spoke it was time for the male and female models to strut their stuff on the runway. All of the gowns were to die for, however my favorite part by far was seeing Geoff Dean, Chet Schreiber, Jonathan Severn and Mike and Tyson Siedman strut their stuff in order to raise money for such an amazing shelter. During the days events, Stephanie Caffee, Special Events & Angels and Amigos Coordinator, was honored for her volunteer work. Bill and Susan Burgos were also Special Honorees for their incredible work with Casa Pacifica. And my mom, sister, and I won a beautiful hat centerpiece to take home. Thanks to everyone who attended and continues to support Casa Pacifica, you are truly make a difference in a life of a child!

5th Annual Orange County Domestic Violence Conference

It was an honor to be asked to speak at this years Orange County conference: Domestic Violence Seen Through the Eyes of our Children. This event was held at the beautiful Crown Plaza in Anaheim. What was even more special is that I had the opportunity to bring one of my sisters with me. This was the first time that Megan had ever been to a conferences or had the opportunity to hear me speak to a large group. The morning Keynote speaker was Dr. Lateefah Wielenga. I really enjoyed hearing her speak and share her firsthand experience with domestic violence. She works with teens who have been through similar situations and gives them a foundation to grow and become successful young women in society. Two of the young ladies in her program came to the podium and shared their life experiences with the audience. Both talked about how they are coping with the effects of the abuse and what their plans are for the future. These young ladies were so positive and had such a great outlook on their future. Both were so inspiring and I wish them nothing but success in their future endeavors. After the morning keynote, my mom, Megan, and I chose to attend a workshop called "Our Journey". Denny B. and Norma C. shared their personal stories of growing up in families where domestic violence was present. It was interesting to hear how different yet similar both Norms and Denny's stories were. Even more interesting is how I share the same views and outlooks on my past and how it effects me today. The lunch Keynote speaker was Alyce LaViolette and boy was she funny! She gave us an insight into her style of therapy which involved overcoming being exposed to domestic violence as a child. I really enjoyed her new fresh outlook on therapy rather than the conventional versions that really do not work. After Alyce's keynote was done, it was off to my workshop called "Through my Eyes - Scars that Bandaids Can't Hide". I shared my personal story on the effects of having domestic violence in my life at an early age. I had an open forum where the audience got to ask me personal questions on the struggles and challenges I face daily due to my past. I had a wonderful time and really learned a lot. I think the attendees did as well. Not to mention I felt not a feeling of being not so alone hearing that other people went through similar situations and they too struggle the same way I do. I am so thankful that people are taking an interest in helping children like myself. It is important not to overlook what is happening in our own backyards. Everyone can learn firsthand from individual like those at this conference, and together we can put an end to domestic violence. Thank you to all of the speakers who shared their story, as well as the attendees for taking an interest in this matter. Last but not lease, thank you Angela Santos and the rest of the staff for putting on this event and for asking me to be a part of it. It truly made a difference in my life!

More Disneyland Luggage for Luggage of Love!

What a magical day today was! A few weeks back I purchased 100 pieces of adorable Disneyland luggage from The World of Disney Store in Downtown Disney for Luggage of Love. The cast members from the store who helped me in this endeavor that day all got together after I left and pitched in with their own money to buy the last 30 additional pieces of luggage as well as Micky Mouse key chains and post cards for Luggage of Love. Today I picked them all up and I honestly cannot thank them enough. This random act of kindness makes such a HUGE difference in the life of children across the state of Califonria. Words cannot express my gratitude, this was all so very humbling.

Meeting with Taryn Foster

I met with a wonderful lady at my office today named Taryn Foster. She is a landscape design student, and the Operations Manager at James Dean Design Landscape Architecture in Thousand Oaks. During our meeting Taryn shared her idea of implement a program where trees, flowers and nature are a part of the lives of children living in shelters. More specifically into a new development being constructed in Northern California where shelter children live in a "boarding school" type of setting. During this interview Taryn asked my mom and myself questions concerning children with similar backgrounds to my own. We discussed the my childhood, and things I enjoyed doing and how the environment itself has had an effect on me. The idea of incorporating more nature into children's lives was so intriguing to me and a concept that I really did not think about. After listen to Taryn's ideas I truly believe these types of settings would be therapeutic. It would not only provide a place of relaxation and beauty but it would also help the children learn and care for something. I hope that this project gets funded because it is a wonderful idea, and I wish Taryn all the best. Thanks again for valuing my opinion on this matter, it means a lot!

Interview with Dr. Bunny Vreeland

I was honored to be asked to be a guest on the Dr. Bunny radio show on KKZZ AM 1400 today. Dr. Bunny Vreeland is a Board Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist. She was so sweet and in our time together I was able to share my personal story as well as learn a little more about hypnotherapy and the positive effects it can have on people. After my airtime with her was up the owners of the McGrath Family Farms were interviewed by Dr. Bunny. They shared information about their farms, yummy veggies and fruits, and their pumpkin patch with the listeners. The neatest part about their farm is that it is 100% organic. They also gave us a fresh organic pumpkin to take home! Thank you Dr. Bunny for letting me share my story with your listeners, it was a pleasure to meet you!

2011 California International Pageant

This weekend was the 2011 California International Pageant held in Downey. This event was bittersweet for both my sister titleholders and myself. We got to stand on the other side of the competition and help all of the girls get ready for their different events. What made this pageant even more special was that my best friend, Meghan Lopez, was competing for the 2011 Miss California International title. I enjoyed spending time with her and watching her shine on the stage. I was so proud of her top 10 placement and her community service award. Meghan, I truly am honored to be a part of your life and watch you dedicate your time daily to your platform without hesitation, you are a true inspiration. I also am so blessed to have a family who supports everything I do. Thank you so much mom, dad, Meggers, Hunter, Jaden, Michael, Papa, Carol, Uncle Timmy, and Aunt Cindy for attending this weekend and watching me crown the new titleholder. You all have helped me become the person I am today and for that I am grateful. Also a big thank you to my boyfriends mom, Marlene, for attending. I am glad I got to share this special evening with you, and that you got a sneak peek into my world of pageantry. Last but not least I want to thank the best director a princess could have, Eddie Peterson. Words cannot express my gratitude for the year of amazingness you gave to me. I have learned so much and grown in so many ways. The California International Pageant is without the best system around, we reign with style and grace. I am honored to have been a part of it. Nina Canacci Dress Line

What an honor it was to model for the 2011 Nina Canacci Dress Line. I met so many wonderful people and seriously had the time of my life. The shoot itself was two full days in Hollywood. I loved modeling all the beautiful gowns. NARFE - Chapter 190

I am so honored that the members of the NARFE invited me back to speak at their monthly meeting. This group is always so welcoming and I really enjoy my visits with them. Today's meeting was very informative, and this time around I learned that the NARFE organization is the largest non-profit contributor to the Alzheimer's Association. So far nationally as a whole, NARFE has raised over 9 million dollars for this cause. WOW, that is truly amazing! After a delicious meal I was called to the podium where I shared all the new adventures my title has taken me on since last being there, as well as what Luggage of Love has been doing. I answered a few questions then the meeting was adjourned. To my surprise I was honored with a referral to a PR firm that is interested in helping me grow Luggage of Love to a household name nationwide. I am so excited about this! Thank you so much for all those who contributed today to Luggage of Love, your donations mean that one less child has to carry their personal belongings in a garbage bag. Just think...the $115.00 that was collected today will provide 16 children somewhere in the system with a brand new piece of luggage, as well as one less thing to have to worry about. Thanks again!

A Day at the Ballet

Yesterday I took part in an amazing event put on by the Ventura County Ballet Company that was sponsored by a grant from The Angel Heart Foundation. This event was very special because it gave local foster and kinship children in Ventura County the opportunity to learn ballet and also preform a piece of their own for their foster and kinship guardians. When I first arrived I was greeted by the lovely women of the Ventura County Ballet Company that were in charge of the event. Eileen Riddle, the president of the ballet company, gave me a personal tour of the studio. The ballet company has their own full costume room with everything imaginable to make a performance come to life. After the tour I was escorted to a room where I met some of the children as they were getting their faces painted & decorating point shoes that they would get to take home. Each of the children were so cute and full of life. I really like how they decorated my crown and requested that I leave it that way forever because it looked much better than the plain way it was! Next it was off to another room where we watched the group learn for the first time how to do ballet. As they continued to practice all of the guardians and myself were escorted to a larger ballet room where we all took seats to watch the children's performance. In no time the group performed a piece for us and it was amazing. I loved the excitement and gratitude that each one had in their eyes. Once the performance was done and each young lady curtsied and each young gentleman bowed, the group got the opportunity to decorate cookies and eat them while I read to them from the book of The Nutcracker. I can tell you first hand the cookies were a BIG hit, they were so delicious. To wrap up this memorable day we were all treated with a special performance by one of the senior dancers from the ballet company who preformed a piece as the Sugar Plum Fairy from The Nutcracker. I want to thank all of the young ladies from the Ventura County Ballet Company who helped out, as well as the senior instructor who taught all of the children. You all have done something that is so wonderful that no words can even express. These children will forever remember this day and it is because you took the time to care. Thank you so very much. Finally, I want to thank Marion Witte from The Angle Heart Foundation who has the biggest heart of anyone I know. I love the passion you have for these children and the devotion you show on a daily basis. It is greatly appreciated by all.

California and Main Event

Today I was able to take part in an event that happens once a month in downtown Ventura. The city blocks off an area on Main Street and merchants set up booths for patrons to browse. The manager of California & Main, Christian, and his assistant Amanda asked if I along with y friends, Meghan and Natallie, would mind modeling some of their beautiful gowns during the event. Of course we did not hesitate one bit to play dress-up. We had such a great time!

Today I met with two fanominal young ladies, Karly & Suzanne, who are doing a piece on children who do not have a voice. We met at the shelter, Casa Pacifica, where I spent some of my time before being adopted into my forever family. They chose to interview both my mom and I so that they could see each of our prospectives on my life since coming into the system. As I continue to do more types of these interviews I find myself growing and learning about my background and how it has affected my daily life. Not only do others get to learn from my story but I too grow and heal by talking about it. Thank you so much ladies for including me in your piece and allowing me into your lives as well. You have truly touched me and I hope that both of you go on to help others in your own ways.

100 pieces of luggage purchased from World of Disney

The most amazing thing happened on my last trip to Disneyland. My best friend, Meghan Lopez, happened to be shopping at Downtown Disney and saw that there was a luggage deal being offered to customers at the World of Disney store. If you made a $20 purchase you could buy a child's set of luggage for only $10, this set included a rolling bag as well as a duffel...which is a pretty good price. So I met with the store manager and discussed purchasing 100 pieces. After explaining about Luggage of Love and sharing my story with her, she made a few calls and shortly I was purchasing the luggage for $7 a piece!!! Then it was off to the motorhome to load the luggage up and be on our way. I know the many children in foster and shelter care are going to love these pieces of luggage. Thanks so much to the World of Disney Store in Downtown Disney for your support, it is greatly appreciated.

Disneyland with Jr. Miss California Intl. 2010 !!!

After the 2011 California International Pageant Orientation was over in Downey this weekend, my sister titleholder, Claire Wright, and I headed to the most magical place on earth...Disneyland! We had so much fun, and even got VIP seats for the new water & light show at California Adventure called World of Color. It was breathtaking and beyond words. I was so glad to have spent the day with Claire and have a special memory such as this before we crown the next queens in less than a month. I only hope that the new titleholders develop a bond like those that I have with my sister titleholders because it is something that is indescribable, and each one of them hold a special place in my heart.

2011 California International Pageant Orientation

This weekend was bitter sweet to say the least. I spent the better part of it mingling with the incoming contestants as well as my sister titleholders, the Peterson Production Crew (Dennis, Heather, and Craig) and of course the best director ever....Eddie Peterson! There were nearly 100 young women from ages 11 to 56 excited with the opportunity of representing the sunshine state as one of the next California International titleholders. During the orientation Ashley, Gretheel, Claire and I got the opportunity to speak about our experiences this year, our platforms, and show off our National wardrobe. We had so much fun and felt like the center of attention.....without all the pressure of competing!!! I know I say this often but it has truly been an honor this past year to represent such an amazing organization. The California International Pageant System and Peterson Productions has given me so much that I am filled with gratitude beyond words. I look forward to crowning the next Miss Teen California International this coming September.

Camp to Belong

Today my travels took me to Orange County. I had the opportunity to spend time with an amazing group of foster, kinship, and adopted children. I was honored to be asked as the Inspirational Night Speaker at this event. This wonderful camp is a week long event and is held yearly. It's a place where siblings have a chance to reunite with one another after being placed in different homes. I can not tell you how much each and every camper touched my heart. They really embraced my story and even shared some of theirs with me. I hope I inspired them to never give up on their dreams and understand that their circumstances only make them stronger. I concluded my speech by letting each of the 60 campers know that Luggage of Love brought a new piece of luggage for each one of them to take home. Should any of those campers read this blog entry, I want them to know that I believe in them and should they every need anything I am only an e-mail away. I love you all!

Day 9...Hair, Rehearsals & Miss Teen Intl. Finals...

Tonight was the final night of competition. This morning was an early one.....6:45 am hair appointment. Then it was off to rehearsals. I can honestly say that I had so many emotions running wild through me all day. Once rehearsals were completed I returned back to my hotel room where my whole family was waiting with open arms. They truly calm my nerves and in no time I was off to the theater to get ready for finals. I chose my best friend, Meghan, my boyfriend, Andy, and of course my mom, Tonya, to walk me to the theater. They are all so very important in my life and always put me in a good place prior to any competition. The teen contestants are all so very amazing. Each and everyone of them have a story and truly work their platforms. I am honored to be a part of such a phenomenal group of young ladies. As we took the stage with the Miss contestants the anticipation grew. When the top 10 were announced I was included. I was so honored to be a part of this group. When everything was said and done the new Miss Teen International was Miss Teen East Coast International, Juliana McKee. She is an amazing young lady who devotes her time to the American Heart Association and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. I know she will do a fantastic job and will use her crown and sash to bring awareness and educate the country on her cause. Although I did not bring home the title I feel like a winner no matter what. I met so many wonderful people and I am honored to be a part of a pageant system that truly showcases the women of today and their accomplishments within their community. More importantly I have the most amazing family a little girl could have dreamed of and they make my life better everyday. I am thankful for their unconditional love and support and humble to be given all these opportunities given my past.

Day 8......FREE DAY!!! Miss Intl Preliminaries Tonight

FREE DAY!!! So what did I do? I slept in of course! When if finally motivated myself to get up and around I went to lunch and had the most delicious chocolate shake. After lunch I came back to the hotel room and hung out with my family. We all just sat around and made one another laugh. As the evening drew near I had to get ready for the Miss International Preliminaries. All of the Teen Contestants met in the lobby before walking over. And to our surprise we were escorted through an underground tunnel from the hotel to the auditorium because it was raining. The Miss did very well, and it was nice to see my sister titleholder, Grethel, onstage working it. I can't wait to see what happens tomorrow in the finals.

Day 7......Judges Rehearsal & Prelims!!!

Yesterday was a very exciting day. I started early with a visit to Tammy's room to get my hair done. We had such a fun time laughing and learning all about the neat things in Alabama. Thank you "Mama" (Tiffany) for making my hair look amazing. Then it was off to judges rehearsal, where we perfected our opening number and had time to practice with our sister miss contestants. After rehearsal we were excused to get ready for the evening preliminaries. The venue looked great and everyone was so excited you could see the anticipation in their eyes. There were so many incredible dresses and we all had such a great time backstage. Congratulations Miss Teen North Carolina Intl., Megan Willey for winning the congeniality award. Megan is such a sweetheart and the award is well deserved. Also congratulations to Miss Teen Arkansas Intl., Mollie Parker for winning the photogenic award she defiantly wins it hands down...a true beauty! I want to thank my family and friends for supporting me I love you all with all my heart! You all mean the world to me and I appreciate all that you do. And Happy 50th Birthday Uncle Steve, thanks for celebrating your 50th at my pageant...it really means a lot to me.

Day 6...Make up, Personal Interview, & Rehearsal

Today was the very first day of the actual competition. The personal interview portion of the pageant is my favorite, and it just so happens that mine was this morning!!! I met with Stephanie, the make-up artist, at 9ish to have my make-up done, and she worked her magic. Stephanie is very talented and I admire her work greatly, she really has a heart of gold. I headed back to my room once my make-up was completed to get my interview suit on and I was off to my interview. Eddie, my amazing director, walked me to my interview and offered words of wisdom and advice. He is one of those people I could listen to for hours. Once up in the waiting room I posed for a few pictures by myself and with my interview group. My interview went extremely well and I would have to say that I really enjoyed every aspect of the process this time. Later that afternoon we all met in the lobby to take a few pictures and head over to practice. Once practice was over we all went back to the hotel to get ready for dinner. I had a lot of fun today and I can't wait to compete at prelims tomorrow...it should be exciting!

Day 5 - Group Photo & Dinner

This evening we were treated to a fabulous dinner. All of the Miss and Teen contestants gathered in the hotel lobby before we were escorted to the front of the theater where we would have our official group photo taken. After the pictures we walked back to the hotel and went into the ballroom for a formal dinner as a group. We laughed and giggled at the different speeches, and had time to relax after a long day of appearances and rehearsals. All the ladies looked amazing in their dresses that seemed to reflect their own person styles. I had a really good time and I am honored to be a part of the International Pageant System.

Day 5.....Navy Pier and the Boys & Girls Club

Today was so much fun! We boarded a bus and headed into the city, our first stop....the Navy Pier. After posing for a group photo we climbed aboard a jet propelled boat called the "Seadog". I had the honor of sitting with Miss Teen Florida, Lauren Eschbach. She is very beautiful and genuine person. We visited, joked, and laughed a lot together. After the boat ride we headed back to the bus where we were driven to our next destination.

Our final stop on this outing was at the Boys & Girls Club, which I can say was by far the best of all three destinations for me. As you all know my heart goes out to any & all children so being at the Boys & Girls Club and having the opportunity to spend some time with these precious individuals was just the icing on the cake! Each of my pageant sisters and I handed out and autographed pictures for the kiddos. But I chose to flip the process around a bit by asking for the children to autograph one to me. They are just as important if not more and I really wanted them to feel like that. They were so excited when I would ask them to sign my paper. I had the privilege to be paired up with a little girl named Izabelle (Izzy). She was such a delight and full of love. To my surprise upon leaving Izabelle did something very interesting. She gave me her stuffed Lion named Simba. I was speechless. I had done something similar while at the shelter and I never knew the feeling the other person felt when receiving the item.....now I do. Words can not describe the feelings I felt knowing that this was one of Izabelle's toys, and she was giving it to me so I could remember her. It was such a heartfelt moment......for both of us.

Today has got to have been the best day yet. My mom, papa, and I were at the Metra to board the train by 8:30 this morning. It was so much fun riding to Union Station and visiting with all the passengers. Everyone was so nice and helpful. Once at the station we took a cab to the Feeding America office and to our surprise they were filming Transformers 3 right across the street! We even got to watch a few scenes being shot before we went to our meeting. Once in the building we were directed to the 20th floor where we were greeted by the Communication Specialist ,Nola Akiwowo, and the Director of Donor Outreach, Rose Dalba. These two ladies were so gracious. After Nola taped the piece on my story of being a homeless child and growing up without food, Rose took us on a tour of the office where we met some of the sweetest people. I want to thank Stephanie, Tracy, Sonja, and Paula for each of your kind words and taking a picture with me. After our tour of the building I shot another piece for their "30 Ways in 30 Days" Hunger Action Program. I pledged to do my best in any and every way I can to help spread awareness on starving children and adults in America. Thank you Rose, Nola, and all of the staff at the Feeding America National office for having me today it was a true honor. What each and everyone of you are doing is beyond words. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

We ended our day by walking a bit in the city where I found my nickname "Dee" carved into the cement. I just had to take a picture. We then caught a cab back to Union Station where I met many nice people along the way, one of which was a gentleman that was homeless at one time. We shared our stories with one another and I can not tell you how inspirational he was to me. It is really amazing how I seem to cross paths with individuals who despite their circumstance stay positive. They have chosen to embrace their past and make a difference rather than become a statistic...my heart is warmed.

Day 4 - Miss Teen International Orientation

This is the first time that all of the teen contestants were together to meet one another before this incredible week begins. I had a great time mingling and taking pictures with some of the girls. Each and everyone of them are so beautiful. During the meeting we introduced ourselves, received information on the events for the rest of the week, and were given our contestant numbers. The highlight of the evening was when we had 3 guest speakers who are volunteers with Go Red. Two of the ladies had incredible personal experiences with heart failure and it touched my heart hearing their story. I am glad they shared it with us because knowledge is powerful....and I certainty learned a lot this evening. Thank you for sharing your stories! Tomorrow we head to the Navy Pier, we get to ride a speed boat, and finish the day by having lunch with the children at Boys & Girls Club.

Day 3 - Free Day for sightseeing

Today was a free day and I took full advantage of it. My family loaded up in two cars and headed to South Barrington, Illinois. Words can not describe how beautiful the drive was. Everything was so green and lush. Brick homes lined the streets with rows and rows of beautiful trees. South Barrington is about a 20 minute drive, but well worth it. Whenever we saw something interesting we stopped and took pictures. I really enjoy the day with my family and I am so glad we got the opportunity to make this trip together and create memories that will last a lifetime.

In my brief time coming and going from the hotel I happened to run into a few ladies who are affiliated with the pageant in one way or another. One of which was Susanne, who is a member of the International Pageant System staff. I really enjoyed our conversation and appreciate her taking time out to pose in a picture with me even though she was really busy. I also ran into the beautiful Miss Teen Minnesota International, Jenna O'Rourke. She is so sweet and was wearing the cutest shirt that had her home state of Minnesota bedazzled on it. Finally rounding up the night I had the honor of posing with Teri from the "Dothan Alabama Crew" (as I like to call them). Terri is always fashioning the most stylish clothes. Last but certainly not least is Lincoln. She is just the cutest little darling in this hotel.

Yay! Today was our first official morning in Chicago. We took advantage of this .opportunity by going out around town of Skockie to see all there was to take in. The neatest thing we saw was a statue that was a replica of the Leaning Tower of Pisa The kiddos and myself had a great time posing in front of it. We ate at a really interesting restaurant named Portillo's, the food was wonderful but the company was even better! The evening came in no time and my sister titleholder, Miss California Intl 2010, Gretheel Olvera, and I were off to watch the Mrs. International Final Competition. We both were so excited to cheer on our sister titleholder Mrs. California Intl 2010, Ashley Pavletich. All of the contestants did incredible and Ashley made Top Ten and looked beautiful doing it! I am so proud of you Ashley, you looked amazing and represent California with grace and elegance. Congratulations I love you!

Well Hello Chicago!

Today has been a long time coming. I can not tell you how excited I was to board the plane with my family for Chicago to represent the Golden State of California and all of the shelter and foster children across the country as I compete in the Miss Teen International Pageant. This is definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity and I am so happy that my family and friends will be there to share it with me. Upon arriving at the hotel I was ecstatic to see my amazing director, Eddie Peterson in the lobby. I also ran into the Dothan Alabama crew...Teri, Joey, and Clay who were so gracious and hospitable when I traveled to Alabama last January for photos and wardrobe for this pageant. My papa even took a picture with all of us in the lobby! Such incredible people and such an amazing day. I am excited to see what the rest of the week has in store for me!

Yesterday I got up at the crack of dawn to get these two pallets out. I did not want to leave to Chicago to compete for Miss Teen International knowing that these two organizations' requests would not be filled. So now both shipments of luggage are headed to their new homes to be delivered in the hands of much deserved shelter children and independent living program children. I hope you all enjoy these pieces as much as I did picking them out for you.

100.7 KHAY Country & 1450 The Boomer Radio Interviews

Today I had the opportunity to visit with radio personalities from the Cumulus Broadcasting studios in Ventura California. My first interview was with Scott Alexander from 100.7 KHAY Early Morning Country Club. It was nice having the opportunity to share my story with him and the KHAY listeners. We talked about my reign thus far as Miss Teen California International 2010, the organization I founded in 2008 "Luggage of Love", and my upcoming trip to Chicago to compete for the coveted Miss Teen International title in a couple of days. The neatest part of my interview was when I was autographing a picture of myself for their wall and Scott asked me to sign their door where all of the celebrity guest speakers had signed! What a true honor to be group with such amazing stars. One of which was a new upcoming country artist who was not well known at the time of her visit....Taylor Swift!!! Thanks Scott for this opportunity it was a true pleasure. I can't wait to return after Nationals to visit with you and Charlye.

Next I took a trip down the hall to 1450 AM The Boomer True Oldies station to visit with Jay Perez. What a super nice gentleman. Jay had lots of kind things to say to me and even picked particular songs to play prior to my interview and after that he thought were fitting. I can not tell you how much I really love oldies genre. My grandpa is such a classy gentleman and ever since I was adopted he has danced with me to songs of his era. I really liked the pictures of Elvis on the wall, and the whole ambiance of the studio. I want to thank Jay for taking the time to interview me and allowing me to share my story with The Boomer listeners.

Camarillo Fiesta & Street Fair

Every year the city of Camarillo has a Street Fair and Fiesta in Old Town. Since I was 7 this particular event has been one of the main highlights of my summer and I always look forward to attending. This year was a bit different however, I was not only a spectator but I also volunteered at the event. The Camarillo Fiesta and Street Fair is a 3 day event. On the first day, Friday, I was honored to announced the sponsors of the event as well as the bands in the evening. On Saturday, I helped sell raffle tickets in the Fiesta booth. The nice thing was that all of the proceeds of the raffle tickets sold went directly to supporting children's programs within the city. Of course I had to take a break from my volunteering to enjoy in all of the festivities, meet wonderful people, try on hats, and eat corn! YUMMY! My sister, Megan, and my little brother, Hunter, even rode a camel with me! It was so much fun. Once again I had a terrific time at Fiesta and Street Fair and I cannot wait to go again next year!

My Meeting with Author Marion Witte...

I truly believe that fate plays a big part in peoples' lives when it comes to who and when people meet one another. Nine times out of ten the impact of those meetings are monumental. While attending an event a few weeks ago I happened to meet a lady who also faced many hardships of abuse in her childhood. She took these painful memories and went on to write a book about her life. In this book she talks about her thoughts and opinions on matters regarding healing after going through such trauma. Little did I know that this magnificent lady, Marion Witte, and the book she autographed to me that day, Little Madhouse on the Prairie, would have such a positive impact and help me better understand the healing process that I am going through in my life today. While reading her book I found myself agreeing with a lot of what she was saying. This is one of the first times in my life I actually felt as though my feelings were validated and not crazy emotional reactions. Although I have many caring and trustworthy people in my life who share with me some of the things that I will encounter in my future that are a direct result of my past...I find it hard to believe what they say to be true. Mostly because they have not experienced it firsthand. Most of these individuals suggest to me how I should "manage" these "issues" based upon what they have learned. Nothing compares to reading Marion's story since she has directly experienced all of it already and I can relate. Everything about her life's work, her passion, and her ability to overcome obstacles is so inspiring to me, and because of that I had to meet with her again. During our lunch meeting I shared with her bits and pieces of my story and how inspiring and helpful her book was to me. Marion graciously donated $500 to Luggage of Love and talked to me about future endeavors together. I am so happy to now have Marion in my life and honored to call her my friend. I would highly encourage anyone who would like to have a better view and understanding of child abuse and ways to heal from it to purchase Little Madhouse on the Prairie.
